One of the greatest delights of staying along the Southern Peninsula is the chance to see the majestic whales that visit our waters throughout the year. Whether you're a local or a traveller from afar, there’s always something awe-inspiring about spotting these gentle giants from the shore.

Most people know about the annual migration of the Southern Right whales, but there’s much more to discover about the whales in our region. Here are a few lesser-known facts that might surprise you:

Tail-Sailing Whales
Southern Right whales are famous for their playful behaviour, but did you know that in False Bay they often engage in a unique activity known as "tail-sailing"? They lift their tails above the water, allowing the wind to carry them along. It’s a behaviour that isn’t often seen elsewhere, and you can sometimes spot them doing this right from the coast.

Bryde’s Whales – Year-Round Residents
While many think of whale watching as a seasonal activity, Bryde’s whales call our waters home all year. These elusive creatures are lesser known than the migratory whales but can often be seen in False Bay, particularly in the quieter months. They're fast swimmers and prefer warmer waters, so keep an eye out during your visit!

The Rare Appearance of Orcas
Orcas, or killer whales, occasionally make an appearance in the bay, usually when they’re hunting. Although they’re not regular visitors, their sightings are always a memorable event. Orcas tend to hunt dolphins or seals, so if you’re lucky, you might witness one of nature’s more dramatic spectacles.

If you’re planning a trip to Fish Hoek, it’s worth setting aside time to explore the coastline, where you can catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures. From June to November, Southern Right and Humpback whales are the stars of the show, but there’s always a chance to spot something unexpected. Whether you're perched on a cliff at Cape Point or simply strolling along the beaches of Fish Hoek and Simon's Town, there's no telling what you might see.

We always enjoy sharing our favourite local whale-watching spots with guests. There’s something magical about sitting by the shore, watching for that telltale spray in the distance. Whether you’re a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or just someone who enjoys a walk by the sea, the whales never fail to impress.

As a visitor, you can help save water while on holiday.

Cut your showers down to two minutes.

Collect shower and basin water and reuse it to flush the toilet.

Use your towel more than once. Instead of dropping it on the floor after a shower, hang it up. This will save water and electricity.

Don’t leave your taps running while you brush your teeth, soap up or shave. Turn off the tap during those in between times and use a reusable cup when brushing your teeth.

Hold off on getting your clothes laundered. Wait until you have a full load of dirty laundry before tossing them in the wash or asking the hotel to wash them.

Hold off on getting your clothes laundered. Wait until you have a full load of dirty laundry before tossing them in the wash or asking the hotel to wash them.

Do not order water at a restaurant if you don’t plan on drinking it. Ideally, you want to carry a reusable water bottle that you can top up every now and then.

Instead of splashing in the hotel pool, pack a beach bag and picnic basket, and head to the beach.
If you’re preparing your own food, wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl and reuse cooking water to water plants, rinse or wash dishes.

Every drop counts so make sure you close taps properly.
